India Reported Most Covid-19 Cases Since the Pandemic Begin
India Reported 103,558 new cases, 11,833 discharges, and 100 deaths in the last 24 hours. The country is going through the second wave of the Coronavirus and this is the biggest number of cases reported per day in India ever since the pandemic stretched out its legs.
Coronavirus Update:
The coronavirus cases, which once reduced in early January and February and the country was expecting everything normal as the vaccine rolled out successfully, are rising rapidly over the few weeks as the daily count spikes up at 1 million on Monday.
As more and more Covid-19 patients are coming to hospitals every day, The Indian Government has started converting train compartments and public places into covid-19 centers, and the restrictions imposed back down with the new protocols of lockdown in affected areas in order to halt the spread.
The Indian Ministry of Health reported- India has recorded 103,558 new cases on Monday: the highest single-day figure since the beginning of the pandemic. The previous highest number of cases was recorded in September 2020, with nearly 98,000 cases in a day during the peak of the first wave. In mid-February, the daily cases had gradually fallen by nearly 90% to reach about 9000 cases per day, which was a sign that the country is overcoming the pandemic successfully. But now, almost two months later in early March, the daily cases have jumped more than tenfold.
“There is a shortage of private beds and beds in major government setups,” said DeepakBaid, the President of the Association of Medical Consultants in Mumbai. Maharashtra and Delhi are two major states where the second wave of Covid-19 began rising and authorities are forced to reimpose the restrictions. Western Maharashtra is accounting for the largest number of cases all over India but entire Maharashtra will undergo new restrictions starting from Monday, daily evening curfew, and strict weekend lockdown- announced by the State Cabinet Minister Nawab Malik on Sunday.
Apart from Maharashtra and Delhi, several other states have also recorded the spike in Covid-19 cases in recent weeks including Karnataka, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, and Punjab.
Prime Minister Held Meeting on Sunday to Discuss the Rising Infection
In the meeting, PM Narendra Modi urged state authorities to “avoid mortality under all circumstances” by ramping up equipment and infrastructure like the availability of oxygen and ventilators in hospitals.
Modi also directed a team of public health specialists to be sent to Maharashtra to take the action against Covid-19 spread so that the country wouldn’t lose the collective gains of the last 15 months- said the release.
Major Gathering and New Variant
According to the experts, the cases may balloon in the coming weeks, due to the number of large gatherings. The major event of 2021 is “Kumbh Mela” where a large number of Hindus visit. However, state and federal authorities have taken all necessary measures to lower the risk.
There are also state elections taking place across the country, many political parties are having rallies, and wedding events are taking place, all such large gatherings are responsible for the super spread of the virus.
New variants are another major concern besides rising cases. More than 770 cases have been identified in India as of late March, according to the Health Minister of the Country. Variants are the big unknown and the scientists are still investigating their effects and qualities- said Laxminarayan. The main concern is now whether the variant circulating is deadlier or more infectious and if existing vaccines work against it.
As of now, the country is going through a challenging situation and will continue in the weeks and months ahead if all necessary precautions are not taken timely.
