UNAIDS Message To Global Leaders At The WEF 2025
The WEF (World Economic Forum) 2025 began yesterday, January 21, in Devos, Switzerland, with an agenda of “Collaboration for the Intelligent Age.” Ding Xuexiang, the vice premier of China, Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Argentina president Javier Milei, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, and many other state heads, politicians, and businesspeople are attending the WEF 2025.
At this event, the UNAIDS (Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS) directed global leaders to prioritise and take prompt actions to provide easy access to new HIV medicines in low and middle-income nations. They need to end AIDS by 2030, the UNAIDS added.
Two drugs, Lenacapavir, manufactured by Gilead Sciences and Cabotegravir of ViiV Healthcare, have shown potential against HIV. Lenacapavir is over 95% effective, with just 2 doses annually. So, the company is now conducting trials for once-yearly shots. Cabotegravir is injected once every 2 months and is being used in many countries like the United States, Australia, Zimbabwe, etc.
Executive Director of UNAIDS Winnie Byanyima discussed other tools to fight HIV, like month-long vaginal rings and longer-acting pills. She says these new technologies give us a great opportunity to end AIDS by 2030. Winnie Byanyima further added, “But it comes with a caveat — only if pharmaceutical companies, governments, and international partners and civil society unite around HIV prevention and treatment revolution, can we use these medicines to their full potential and end AIDS much sooner than we previously thought.”
UNAIDS admired Gilead and ViiV’s move to license general manufacturing but added that the process is progressing slowly. So, products aren’t expected to be available before 2026. UNAIDS also urged pharmaceutical companies to ensure affordable pricing and low competition in the market for the new HIV medicines.
