The WHO (World Health Organisation) has organised the first-ever global oral health summit. Delegations from more than 110 countries, including UN agencies, International organisations, etc., are gathering in this meeting to build roadmaps and negotiate a joint declaration on oral health. This meeting began on November 26 and will end on November 29.
Oral diseases are the most typical noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and affect around 3.5 million people globally. These diseases include cavities, gum problems, tooth loss, oral cancer, noma, etc., which affect not only the mouth and teeth but also the facial structure.
The Kingdom of Thailand Government hosts this event, which is a preparatory process for the fourth UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs in 2025. It will boost progress towards UHC (Universal Health Coverage), restate political complements of members, and promote global strategy and action plan implementation.
H.E. Mr Somsak Thepsutin, Thailand’s Public Health Minister, stated at this meeting, “Oral health is a crucial aspect of overall health, and Thailand is proud to host this landmark global meeting. Our commitment to universal health coverage includes ensuring that all citizens have access to quality services for optimal oral health and promoting prevention through our communities, reinforcing our dedication to improving health outcomes for everyone.”
Key outcomes of the summit are the WHO Director and General’s report for the fourth UN HLM on NCDs in 2025 and superior recognition and integration of oral disease. During this meeting, a new coalition on oral health might be announced.
