The bustling capital city of Karnataka, Bengaluru, is witnessing a panicking growth in dengue fever cases. In the last 20 days, 1036 cases have been reported in the BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) limits, a twofold increase compared to June 2023. Chikkamagaluru, Mysuru, Haveri, Shivamogga, Chitradurga, and Dakshina districts have also reported many cases. Until June 24, 5,374 cases and 5 deaths had been reported in the state.
The Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has taken swift action in response to the dengue outbreak. He convened a meeting with Dinesh Dundu Rao and other officials on Tuesday, 5 June 2023, to address the issue. In the meeting, he clearly instructed all the officials to treat dengue as a serious health threat. Siddaramaiah also directed stakeholders to ensure the availability of treatment, medicine, and blood platelets, demonstrating the government’s commitment to public health.
Experts claimed the unusual weather caused this dengue surge. They shared that the lack of rain and cold winds created an ideal breeding atmosphere for mosquitoes. The BBMP also has increased alertness with fever surveys, leading to higher detections and growth of reported cases.
Dengue does not distinguish between upper and lower-class individuals. The Chief Commissioner of BBMP, Tushar Girinath, was found positive in a dengue test held on Saturday, 22 June 2024. Despite feeling unwell from Friday, Tushar Girinath continued his duties and inaugurated the multilevel car park at Freedom Park.
