The Centre for Chronic Disease Control (CCDC) recently completed an examination of 1.1 million Indians for high blood pressure during their May Measurement Month (MMM). CCDC started this initiative back in 2017 for healthcare. It is the official Indian partner of MMM, the biggest global project to promote regular BP check-ups. Over 100 nations participated in this campaign and screened around 6 million people till now.
Around 63% of deaths in India are caused by non-communicable diseases, and 27% are caused by cardiovascular disease. High blood pressure is the major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. CCDC strives to inform and empower people to prevent these health conditions through MMM and other annual projects.
On 17 May, World Hypertension Day, CCDC collaborated with IAPEN (India Association for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition) to organise health camps, training, and lectures. These camps were organised around cities in NCR, Maharashtra, Punjab, Gujrat, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha. 471 individuals from medical colleges, hospitals, and other institutes volunteered in this initiative. Camps spread health awareness, and lectures informed people about the risk of hypertension and tricks to manage BP.
The Executive Director of CCDC, Professor D. Prabhakaran, stated about the MMM, “Managing high blood pressure is crucial to preventing heart attacks and strokes. CCDC is proud to have conducted more than 1.1 million screenings nationwide throughout the seven additions to the MMM campaign. By reaching individuals nationwide, we are committed to promoting heart health and reducing the burden of cardiovascular disease in our community.”
The MMM was launched by the International Society of Hypertension. It inspires individuals aged 18+ to check their blood pressure regularly and offers diet and lifestyle advice to people with high blood pressure.
