MV Diabetes School of Podiatry: Elevating Diabetic Care
MV Diabetes Royapuram and the Academy of Physicians in Wound Healing (APWH), USA, are launching a specialised training School of Podiatry. It’s a one-of-a-kind school and will be operated under the banner of the DFRI (Diabetic Foot Research India). This school will be located in Royapuram and will train doctors and paramedics on the basics of Podiatry, such as nail care and other treatment methods for Diabetics.
The chief physician at MV Diabetes, Vijay Vishwanathan, shared that over 101.4 million diabetic patients live in India. Among them, Tamilnadu alone accounts for 7 to 8 million patients. A serious complication people face with diabetes is foot problems, which can result in severe outcomes like amputation (a surgical procedure in which a limb or body parts like a finger, toe, foot, arm or leg are removed as per requirement).
Dr. Vishwanathan added, “Foot ulcers are common and can be particularly costly to treat due to their recurring nature, making them more expensive than treatments for complications like retinopathy or kidney transplants. So, preventive care is crucial for avoiding foot complications in diabetic patients.”
The inaugural training session will be conducted from October 23 to 25. It will host 25 physicians, including some paramedics from Tamilnadu. After the three-day course, participants will receive 6 credits from the Tamil Nadu Medical Council. These are the Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit hours for registered medical practitioners.
The curriculum will cover all the fundamentals of diabetes, diabetic foot care, surgical interventions for foot issues, and the latest treatment methods in diabetes management. There are several natural ways to control diabetes at home, but a doctor’s consultation is necessary.
