AI Uses ECG Data to Calculate Heart Age & Risk
Recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI)have led to the development of algorithms capable of analysing standard 12-lead electrocardiograms (ECG) to estimate the heart’s biological age. This innovative approach provides valuable insights into an individual’s cardiovascular risk profiles, potentially transforming preventive cardiology.
Associate Professor Yong-Soo Baek of Inha University Hospital in South Korea explains that “our research showed that when the biological age of the heart exceeded its chronological age by seven years, the risk of all-cause mortality and major adverse cardiovascular events increased sharply. Conversely, if the algorithm estimated the biological heart as seven years younger than the chronological age, that reduced the risk of death and major adverse cardiovascular events.”
He added, “Using AI to develop algorithms in this way introduces a potential paradigm shift in cardiovascular risk assessment.”
Incorporating AI into routine ECG analysis signifies a pivotal shift toward personalised medicine, where cardiovascular risks are assessed based on individual heart function. As results progress, integrating biological age metrics into clinical practice holds promise for boosting cardiovascular health outcomes through early detection.
An alternative to boost heart health is regular exercise and a balanced diet. Keeping yourself fit results in a healthy heart. Regular checkups are also necessary to track your heart health.
