India has emerged as a global leader in traditional medicines, all because of the remarkable growth of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy). Between 2014 and 2023, the AYUSH market experienced exponential growth, increasing from USD 2.85 billion to USD 43.4 billion, according to Shripad Yesso Naik, Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy.
Addressing the press conference, Naik also highlighted that the sector’s exports have doubled, rising from USD 1.09 billion to USD 2.16 billion. The AYUSH was incepted under the leader of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014. Since then, the ministry has spearheaded significant advancements in public health, education, research and economic development, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
Naik also shared that there are currently over 7,55,780 registered AYUSH practitioners in the country, including 886 undergraduate and 251 postgraduate colleges, which collectively enrol 67,093 students annually. Additionally, there are 3,844 hospitals and 36,848 dispensaries, including 3,403 hospitals and 27,118 dispensaries in government sector.
AYUSH also offers telemedicine services, through which it provides quality healthcare to remote areas in India. Significant government support is one factor behind AYUSH’s notable growth. The rise in the AYUSH market has also contributed to India’s economic growth. The exponential growth of the AYUSH market demonstrates India’s ongoing leadership in the global wellness industry, driven by increasing recognition of traditional practices like Ayurveda and Yoga by locals and tourists as well.
“The Ministry of AYUSH continues to innovate and globalise traditional Indian medicine, ensuring quality, safety, and accessibility. India is poised to lead the world in holistic and sustainable healthcare solutions by leveraging technology, expanding research, and fostering global partnerships,” Naik said. With the continued government support and acceptance of ancient wellness practices, AYUSH is expected to be recognised worldwide on large scale.
